Solitude vs. Solidarity: The Two Europeans Who Taught Me About Mutual Support
The Shock of Cultures: Individualism Meets The Tribe
I live in a country where individualism is often the norm. In business, we value self-reliance, self-sufficiency, and the idea of making it on your own. This is the path I myself took to build my firm.
Yet, there is one value that deeply moves and challenges me: solidarity (mutual support). I discovered its profound power through my volunteer work, where I had the chance to meet two extraordinary women: one of Swedish origin and the other of German origin.
Their Superpower: Solidarity as a System
These women inspire me with their radically different approach to mutual support. For them, solidarity is not an abstract concept; it is a system integrated into how they live and conduct business.
The Swede (The Collective Intention): She embodies the idea that success is not solitary. Her culture values the collective and collaboration over competition. She constantly reminds me that success is amplified when we stand together.
The German (The Rigor of Mutual Aid): She brings rigor and reliability to mutual support. If she says she will help, her commitment is total. Her reliability is proof that solidarity doesn't need to be purely emotional; it can be logical and systematic (something my INTP deeply admires!).
The Value That Drives Me: Fairness in Action
Living in a culture of individualism taught me resilience, but their solidarity challenges me on a core value for my firm: Fairness (Équité).
Fairness in Community: I strive to integrate this solidarity into my own tribe: by sharing my learnings (Built in Public), celebrating others' successes, and being the lighthouse that brings clarity, even if the return isn't immediate.
Fairness in Business: My rejection of aggressive tactics, my evolving proposal (without rigid contracts), and my willingness to refer misaligned clients are acts of solidarity towards the wider community. I give a chance to the other professional.
Conclusion: Building Our Own Tribe
Their example reminds me that the solepreneur doesn't have to remain isolated. The highest level of autonomy (my 8w7) is achieved when we actively choose to build our own supportive tribe, no matter where we live.
Thank you to both of them for moving me and for teaching me that rigor of the heart is the most powerful force.
